1. Water pouring over the edge
The most obvious sign. When the channel or outlet is blocked, rain has nowhere to go but over the side.
2. Plants growing from the gutter
If seeds have taken root, there is enough debris in there to hold soil and water.

3. Staining on outside walls
Streaks and marks running down brick or render below the gutter often mean it has been overflowing for a while.
4. Dripping joints
Debris holds water against joints and seals, so they drip long after the rain has stopped.
5. Water not reaching the downpipe
If the downpipe stays dry in heavy rain, the gutter or outlet is likely blocked.
6. Sagging gutters
Wet debris is heavy. A gutter pulling away from its brackets may be carrying too much weight.
7. You cannot remember the last clean
If it has been more than a year, there is probably a build-up, even if you cannot see it from the ground.
